Color-Changing Lavender Lemonade: How to Use Your Kit

There’s something a little magical about watching a glass of lemonade shift from deep blue-violet to a soft pink before your eyes. That’s the fun built into our Lavender Lemonade Kit — a blend of farm-grown lavender buds, butterfly pea flowers, and dehydrated lemon slices that turns a simple drink into a little kitchen science experiment (and a delicious one at that).

Here’s everything you need to know to brew up your own pitcher.

Each kit comes with everything you need to flavor and color one pitcher (about 6 cups):

–  Approximately 4g dried lavender buds

– Approximately 8 butterfly pea flowers

– 3 dehydrated lemon slices

You’ll just need to add a few things from your own kitchen: fresh lemon juice, water, and a sweetener of your choice if you like things on the sweeter side.

Why Butterfly Pea Flower?

Butterfly pea flower tea steeps into a beautiful natural blue color, but the magic happens when it meets something acidic, like lemon juice. The pH change causes the color to shift from blue to a vibrant purple or pink right in your glass. It’s a fun, all-natural way to make your lemonade feel a little more special, especially for kids (or anyone who loves a good “wow” moment).

How to Make Your Lavender Lemonade:

Step 1: Boil Your Water

Bring 6 cups of water to a boil. This will be the full amount of water used for your pitcher — no need to add more later.

Step 2: Steep the Lavender and Butterfly Pea Flowers

Once the water reaches a boil, turn off the heat and add your lavender buds and butterfly pea flowers directly to the hot water. Steeping off the heat (rather than at a continued boil) gives a smoother flavor and helps prevent the lavender from tasting bitter. Stir occasionally and let everything steep for 5–10 minutes — the longer you steep, the more vibrant the blue color and the more pronounced the lavender flavor will be.

Step 3: Strain

Once steeped to your liking, strain out the lavender buds and butterfly pea flowers, leaving you with a fragrant blue tea base.

Step 4: Add the Lemon

Stir in fresh lemon juice (about 2 lemons’ worth is a great starting point) and watch the color transform from blue to a beautiful pink or purple. You can also drop in your dehydrated lemon slices at this point — they’ll add a subtle citrus flavor and look lovely floating in the pitcher.

Step 5: Sweeten (Optional)

If you’d like your lemonade sweeter, stir in honey, sugar, or your favorite sweetener while the mixture is still warm so it dissolves easily.

Step 6: Chill and Serve

Pop the pitcher in the fridge until cold, or serve over ice right away. Garnish with extra lemon slices or a sprig of lavender if you’re feeling fancy!

A Few Tips:

– For a lighter lavender flavor, steep for closer to 5 minutes; for a bolder flavor, go closer to 10.

– Add the lemon juice gradually and watch the color change happen in real time. It’s a great activity to do with kids.

– This kit makes one pitcher, but the lavender buds, butterfly pea flowers, and dried lemon slices are easy to come back to for a second round if you’d like to stretch your kit further with a lighter batch.
